by RANJAN ANANDAPPA

Milo continues their unbroken 13 year-old partnership with the Sri Lanka Schools Sports Council as they endorsed their willingness to a generous sponsorship for a further period of one year for five disciplines in the schools sports curriculum at the BMICH on Friday.

Nestle's first sponsored a schools' football tournament in 1989 and extended it to volleyball, rugger, swimming and athletics and never looked back thereafter, helping to uplift the standard of sports and aiming to produce sports personalities of international repute.

Dr. Karunasena Kodituwakku, the Minister of Human Resource Development, Education and Cultural Affairs who graced the occasion said that he was extremely happy with the sponsorship with Milo and thanked the sponsors along with the other private sector companies who have enhanced to maintain the high standards of sports which the country enjoys now.

"Unlike in other countries, Sri Lanka's talent in sports has always been spotted while at school and the development of school sports has always been a key priority area for the Ministry of Sports. In this endeavour Nestle Lanka Ltd. through its world renowned brand 'Milo' has been a partner and a major source of strength", said the Minister.

The minister pointing out the importance of sponsorship said that although cricket looks self sufficient now, it too needed sponsorship in the past. He further said that in no part of the world that you get such competition like in Sri Lanka for a student to get himself admitted to a University for further studies. Though being burdened with studies many forget the extra curricular activities in school. Getting involved in sports makes a person mentally and physically developed which is very important to build a healthy nation.

Mohammed Hamza, the Marketing Manager of Nestle Ltd, who was the guest of honour, said that he did not believe in short-term sponsorships and said that their commitment for sports was during good and bad times alike. He said that his intention was not to sponsor only glamour sports at under 19 level, but to help youngsters between the ages of 12 to 19, not only in the city but in the rural areas as well.
