SriLankan Airlines sponsor Travel Trade Soccer and Netball on June 2

by PELHAM JURIANSZ

The Travel Trade Sports Club (TTSC) has organised its annual soccer and netball tournament on June 2 at the Shalika grounds, Narahenpita commencing at 8.30 a.m.

The soccer tournament is sponsored for the 4th consecutive year by Sri Lankan Airlines and the netball tournament has been revived after about 4 years.

Speaking at the press briefing at the Holiday Inn Hotel, Tyronne Perera, the media and publicity co-ordinator for the TTSC said that it is a happy occasion that netball has been revived after a lapse of 4 years as SriLankan Airlines dominated the netball scene.

Denindre Seneviratne, the President of the TTSC said that SriLankan Airlines had come forward at an opportune time and sealed their commitment with the TTSC by sponsoring the soccer tournament for yet another year and also stepped in to give 'life' to the netball section.

"There are more events on the calendar of the Travel Trade Sports Club, including a motor rally which we have planned for the latter part of the year. This soccer and netball tournaments come in the wake of the volleyball tournament which was successfully concluded at the Albert Pieris Stadium, Wennappuwa last week," said Denindre Seneviratne, the President of the TTSC.

G. T. Jeyaseelan the Head of the Commercial Division of SriLankan Airlines said that it is a pleasure to sponsor the two events, one for the ladies and the other for men and that he was in the first soccer team that represented Air Lanka in 1980.

This year, 25 teams are participating in the seven-a-side soccer and SriLankan Airlines, last year's runners-up, are the top seeds, because last year's winners, Grand Hotel, Nuwara Eliya have not entered a team.

Hilton Hotel, last year's Plate Champions, are the bottom seeds. A total of Twenty eight matches will be worked off in three categories, namely Cup, Bowl and Plate. There will be special awards for Best Goalkeeper, Best Goal scorer, Most Outstanding Player, Most Promising Player and Most Valuable Player.

In netball, 13 teams will vie for honours. The tourney is divided into four groups and there are awards for Best Defence, Best Attack, Best Shoot and Most Outstanding Player.

Eighteen matches will be worked off and G. T. Jeyaseelan, Head of Commercial Division of SriLankan Airlines will be the chief guest.

The groups for netball are as follows:
