Anne Gunasekera - St. Lawrence Sportswoman of the Year

Anne Margarita Gunasekera, the ace netballer, basketballer and athlete from St. Lawrence's School, Wellawatte received the most coveted sportswoman of the Year Award, which is the school's highest honour for a Sportswoman at the Awards Nite held at the Bishop's College Auditorium last Friday.

She received this award from the chief guest, Mr. Prema Pinnawela, acting Secretary of the AAA. Pinnawela complimented the school for its excellence in discipline and scholastic achievement and sports.

Anne Gunasekera won first place in the 800 metres at the Colombo South Meet - 2001 and was placed second in the 400 m and also first in the 1500m.

In the Colombo Zonal Meet - 2001, she secured third place in the 400m and second in the 800m.

For her excellence in sports, she was rewarded with a scholarship to the United States for basketball training and to view the World Scholar Athletic Games 2001 held in Rhode Island, USA.

Sr. Mary Gertrude, Principal at St. Lawrence's in her message said that this is only the second occasion that the school is having Colours Nite. She said that with the present scenario where corruption is rife, with match fixing etc. it is important that we maintain high standards in sports.

The School Games Captain, Niroshi Peiris said that sports has been well accepted as a great contributor to the complete moulding and total development of one's character.

The school has excelled in the disciplines of athletics, swimming, netball, basketball, table tennis, chess, gymnastics and throwball, which is a relatively new sport.

The following outstanding sportswomen were honoured by the school for their excellence.

Rochelle Fernando was awarded junior chess colours. She had received second place in the Anatoly Karpov Competition conducted by the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka, and was placed fifth in the All-Island Team Board Prize.

Also awarded chess colours was young Nishani Amalka who secured 4th place in the Anatoly Karpov Tournament.

Ace basketball player Celeste Ranasinghe was awarded colours as she was a member of the Colombo District Schools Team which won the Championship and was awarded the Gold Medal.

Table Tennis colours was awarded to Dewshi Dias a member of the All Island Schools Inter-Schools Table Tennis Championships.

Also awarded basketball colours was Ruwesha Samarawickrema who visited the United States for basketball training and viewing of the World Scholar Athletic Games held in Rhode Island in USA.

Athletic colours were awarded to vice-captain of Sports, Christina Nugara who was third in Long Jump and Javelin in the Colombo South Meet-2001.

Athletics colours were also awarded to Peumini Pieris, and re-awarded to Nilma Lakmali Hewagamage, Anne Gunasekera and Sabrina de Livera.

Table Tennis colours were re-awarded to Marysse Ranaweera, Melanie Mack and Dilupa Ankuberegedara.

The throwball team were commended for their excellence as they were selected to represent Sri Lanka in India and were runners-up in the tournament.

At various intervals the audience was entertained by the school teachers and especially the students who performed aerobics and gymnastics to an array of popular songs.
