CH all the way - beat Air Force 58/3

by LAL GUNASEKERA

CH & FC looking very sharp scored a big 58 points (4 goals, 6 tries) to 3 (1 penalty) win over Air Force after leading 24-3 at half time in their first-round Caltex 'A' Division League Rugby Championship game at Maitland Crescent yesterday.

CH, even minus skipper Sashu Cooray and Milinda Jayasinghe both through injury would have fared even better if they did try to 'run the ball' more often than attempting to use brute strength to get past their opponents. This was their fourth consecutive win.

The Airmen lost again - for the fourth time. Over the years they have not shown any improvement and could end the season without a single win and right at the bottom of the table.

CH scored four tries in the first session through left winger Ajith Upawansa on two occasions, prop Naren Perera and third row forward, Bertie Jayasekera. Nalin Dissanayake converted two of these tries. For the Airmen Ranjith Anthony fired across the only penalty after fluffing one.

Came the final session and CH scored six more tries. Upawansa scored his third try for the game minutes before the final whistle, while the earlier tries were scored by Bertie Jayasekera centre Lasantha Ediriweera, Nalin Dissanayake on two occasions and centre Yuganthara Kurunaratne. Dissanayake converted two of these tries. Aruna Jayasekera refereed.
