Army in hard fought 22-17 win over Police

by PELHAM JURIANSZ

Army secured a hard fought 22 points(1 goal, five penalties) to 17 (1 try, 4 penalties) win over their forces rival Police at the Army grounds Galle Face in their Caltex "A" Division Rugby encounter yesterday.

Army opened scoring early when their fullback T. A. Silva put over a penalty to make it 3-nil in their favour.

Minutes later Army once again scored when they stormed the Police defence to score through No. 8 Dharmapala and Silva put the finishing touches by converting to give Army a commanding lead of 10-nil.

Police who scored most of their points in the early part of the game through penalties were awarded a penalty and scored through Harshana Wijeweera to reduce the lead to 10-3 in favour of Army. This penalty seemed to energise the Police who once again put over a penalty through the efforts of Wijeweera to reduce the deficit and make the scoreline 10-6 still in Army's favour.

In the 25th minute Army went further ahead when fullback T. A. Silva put over a scorching 45-metre penalty to make the scoreline 13-6 still in Army's favour.

A further penalty for Police by Wijeweera made it 13-9. Army, however, came back just before the half to make it 16-9, with another penalty by T. A. Silva, who fired across another penalty to make it 19-9. Wijeweera had a penalty for Police and they closed up the gap. Army 19-12.

Army were on the move and they struck through a penalty by T. A. Silva and finally Anura Fernando scored Police's only try.

Referee: Dilroy Fernando.
