Kandy SC win well 43/0 despite unexpected resistance

by S. M. JIFFREY ABDEEN, Kandy sports correspondent

The defending league champions Kandy Sports Club scored a 43 points (5 goals, 1 try, 1 penalty) to nil win over Kandy Youths Sports Club in their Caltex League 'A' Division rugby tournament match played at Nittawela yesterday. At the 'breather', Kandy SC led 31-0.

Though Kandy won, they met with unexpected resistance from the Kandy Youths especially in the second half when the latter tackled low and hard to keep their opponents at bay. In fact Kandy SC were able to score only 12 points in the second half which will give some indication to the kind of opposition the Kandy Youths would have subjected to their stronger opponents who ran up scores like 72-3, and 109-3 in their two previous outings.

Before the commencement of the match, both teams were introduced to the Mayor of Kandy, Kesara Senanayake and other officials of Kandy SC and Kandy Youths.

The game, too, was bitterly fought out and at one stage two players one from either side - Sameera Silva of Kandy SC and Kavinda Pullukuttiarachchi were sent 'Sin Bin' for fighting by referee D. Nimal.

Kandy SC opened scoring early in the game when skipper and lock forward Pradeep Basnayake scored off a line out and fullback Nalaka Weerakkody added the extra points. Kandy 7-0.

Kandy SC scored again in the 16th minute when Sri Lanka winger Radhika Hettiarachchi ran at a blistering pace about 35 metres following a three quarter movement to touch down mid right. Nalaka Weerakkody added the extra points, and also converted a penalty a little later for Kandy to lead 17-0.

Skipper Pradeep Basnayake who had a good game fashioned the third try after the forwards had done the spade work. Nalaka Weerakkody added the extra points. Kandy led 24-0.

Shortly before the recess, winger Sameera Silva scored for Kandy off a three quarter movement and Nalaka Weerakkody obliged with the conversion.

Kandy's try scoring machine appeared to be working well when they resumed their scoring in the 2nd minute of the second half with stand off Nilfer Ibrahim 'selling a short dummy' to the opposing forwards and sent a long pass to winger Radhika Hettiarachchi who waltzed his way to plant a fine try. Weerakkody added the extra points. Kandy 38-0.

Kandy SC planted another try in the 15th minute of the second half through flanker Sanjeewa Bogahawatte but Nalaka Weerakkody for once failed with the conversion. Kandy led 43-0.

At this stage, Kandy Youths came back storming into the game by fine tackling which stopped the free scoring Kandy SC in their tracks. They also made several attempts to score but poor finish deprived them the chance of scoring.

It was in the final ten minutes of play that Kandy SC once again took play into Kandy Youths territory but the latter's defences held on gallantly.
