President has no intention of dissolving Parliament-Harim Peiris Presidential media spokesman Harim Peiris has denied speculation that there was an intention to use presidential powers in the Constitution to dissolve Parliament and thereby end the tenure of the United Front Government. The Constitution allows for the dissolution of Parliament only after the completion of a year's tenure of an elected House. The current Parliament completes one year in December. While reiterating the commitment of President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga to the peace process, the President's Media Secretary Harim Peiris told a news conference on Friday that President Kumaratunga had advised the Norwegian delegation that met her recently, to include the core issues in the agenda. Rumours in the country that the President was planning to dissolve the UNF Government by December were `baseless and without foundation', the media secretary said."Certainly neither the President nor her Secretary nor any member of her staff holding responsible positions nor any MPs of the PA have ever made such utterances. There is no intention to dissolve this government. As a policy we do not comment on rumours. But this rumour has gone beyond the realm of rumours and hence we thought it fit to make this comment", he said. Mr. Peiris further said that the President had dissolved the previous PA Government on the advise of the then Premier Ratnasiri Wickremanayake. He said that when the PA lost its majority in parliament, the then Premier Wickremanayake had told her that he had lost his majority in Parliament and on his advice the President then dissolved the PA government. |
