SELCO Solar to light up the North-East

SELCO Solar Lanka Limited (SSLL) a solar company with successful operations in both rural and urban markets, is looking forward to light up the war-torn Northern and Eastern parts of the country.

In this connection, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of SSLL, Susantha Pinto carried out an inspection tour to the war-torn areas along with the representatives of other solar developers. They visited Vavuniya, Jaffna, Kayts, Pungudutiwu, Chavakachcheri, and surrounding areas. Since these areas not connected to the main grid at present, the people have no other option, but to seek the assistance of kerosene oil.

Pinto said that he has had positive discussions with the representatives of the Chamber of Commerce and some non-governmental organisations of the area. According to Pinto, though people are aware of solar power, they have not been able to get the full benefit of this source because of the war. The present situation has allowed them to reap the benefits of this popular and feasible option in renewable energies. Pinto further said that there is scope for marketing solar products in these areas, and even if the Ceylon Electricity Board repairs the damaged power lines and re-instate the power supply, still there will be vast areas to be cleared, leaving room for solar power.

SSLL will be further strengthened to do this by attracting more investments from the US-based parent company, Solar Electric Light Company, which has subsidiaries in India, Vietnam, China, Brazil and Africa. The commitment of the parent company was revealed when Anthony Dixon, a Director of the parent company visited Sri Lanka in April. Dixon further pointed out that since the US government is also very optimistic on the peace initiatives of Sri Lanka, there is potential to attract more funds towards this task.

SSLL, has its head office in Nugegoda and nine branches spread throughout the country. It installs over 300 solar lighting systems per month, both in rural and urban households and provides a guaranteed after sales service for two years.
