More lustre for gem, jewellery courses

The Gem and Jewellery Research and Training Institute, the government body entrusted with research and training activities in the gem and jewellery industry, has taken steps to improve the quality of its training programmes.

The courses will be upgraded through the following measures:

Review of course content - By re-examining and comparing the syllabus of every programme with the course content recommended by the Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission. After the necessary modifications are done, the syllabi will be further examined by a panel of experts before final acceptance;

Monitoring of implementation - To ensure that the programme is implemented in accordance with the plan. Monitoring will be on a daily and weekly basis and if there are any deviations from the plan, corrective measures will be taken as required to ensure complete implementation; and

Feedback on effectiveness of training - Those who have received training will be assessed on the usefulness of the training and their employability to be used in the modification or designing of programmes.

At present, the Institute conducts several training programmes to develop the skills of young persons to be gainfully employed in the industry. Programmes are conducted on gem cutting and polishing, gemmology and gem identification, jewellery designing and manufacturing, stone-setting in jewellery and heat treatment. The institute has training centres in Ratnapura, Eheliyagoda, Colombo, Kandy, Warakapola, Galle, Matara, Badulla and Moneragala.

The training programmes of the Institute are subsidised by the government while funding assistance is also provided by the World University Service of Canada for two training programmes conducted at Moneragala and Badulla.

The Institute is also taking steps to introduce a gem identification course for foreigners so they can familiarise themselves with Sri Lankan sapphires and other gems, including imported stones and synthetics.
