ANCL Jak-planting ceremony In order to encourage planting of jak trees (also called as Bath Gasa or Kap Ruka) a planting ceremony will be held by the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Ltd. (Lake House) at the BMICH on Tuesday, June 11, at 4.00 p.m. This date is of special value as it was on 11th June, 1918 that the famous Kos Mama (Arthur V. Diyes), launched his campaign of planting jak trees. There would be various programmes to educate schoolchildren as well as general public of the value of planting jak trees and the nutritional and medicinal values of the foods prepared with jak-fruit. The organisers, ANCL, invites all concerned to participate in this worthy cause by supplying jak saplings and by planting saplings in order to face the future food scarcities predicted. Deputy Leader of the UNP, Hon. Minister Karu Jayasuriya and the Hon. Leader of the Opposition Mahinda Rajapakse will grace the launching ceremony as chief guests. |
