'Nuke war unlikely' - AEA head

Atomic Energy Authority Chairman Professor Prinath Dias says that a nuclear war between India and Pakistan is 'extremely unlikely'.

Professor Dias was quoted in our news report last week, headlined 'experts alert for fall-out from Indo-Pak nuke war', describing the dangers to Sri Lanka in the event of a nuclear conflict.

In a subsequent letter Professor Dias says:

"It is extremely unlikely that either Pakistan or India will use nuclear weapons in a war, since it would result its own destruction due to retaliation by the other country with similar weapons, and because of the severe economic pressures these countries would have to face owing to sanctions that would certainly be imposed on them by the international community. Several countries with nuclear capabilities have engaged in wars, without such weapons being used."
