UNICEF to tie up with SLMM

Senior officials of UNICEF Sri Lanka have recently met with the Head of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) to identify areas of cooperation in the speedy implementation of the clauses of the Ceasefire Agreement, which relates to the children's well-being. UNICEF's mandate is to protect the rights of children as enshrined in the Convention on the Rights of the Child. UNICEF pays specific attention to clauses relating to children in the Ceasefire Agreement. These clauses address "hostile acts including torture, intimidation, abduction, extortion and harassment; the vacation of occupied school buildings and the return to their intended use; and the revision of set-up of checkpoints within cities and towns to introduce systems to prevent harassment of the civilian population."

UNICEF believes that all Sri Lankan children have the right to live in a peaceful environment and to be protected from the effects of conflict. Children have also the right to be helped recover from the effects of conflict. The promising steps that parties are undertaking under the Ceasefire Agreement are paving the way to a more secure and brighter future for all the children of Sri Lanka.
