World Environment Day in a big way

Members of 50 environmental organisations will join hands to hold an exhibition, a demonstration and sale of their products as a part of the World Environment Day celebrations.

The event will commence at 10,00 am on June 11 on the grounds opposite the National Art Gallery at Ananda Cumaraswamy Mawatha, Colombo.

This is the first time that such an event is held with "Give Earth a Chance", as its slogan in collaboration with partner organisations Global Environmental Facility (GEF)/ Small Grant Program (SGP) and other national environmental organisations, funded by UNDP/GEF/SGP.

They will display their products at the exhibition and hold demonstrations which include eco-friendly energy systems such as bio-gas, solar power, Wind power and Micro-hydro power. Organic farming and other activities connected with biodiversity conservation will help creating an awareness in schools and the general public. There will be mobile exhibitions from organisations like Sarvodaya, the Young Zoologists and Green Movement are expected to be present at the event.

The event is organised by the Ruk Rekaganno which was formed in 1975 and which has been serving the community with projects to protect, trees, forests and natural environment.

According to the organizers, Mother Earth battered by the activities of seven billion people, must be given a chance to recover and refurbish herself, here in Sri Lanka, like in every other part of the world, after a century of forest and land denudation, tons of pollutants in the soil, and unaccountable quantities of noxious gases released into the atmosphere.

The organisers also pointed that the grant received by both big and small environmental groups have a chance to carry out some work on environment conservation and also build up their organisations.
