Jak tree planting to commence on Tuesday

by Vimukthi Fernando

125 jak saplings will be planted at the BMICH grounds on Tuesday, June 11, when the jak-fruit popularisation project organised by ANCL will be inaugurated. The saplings would be named after guests who plant them and 25 saplings are to be maintained under the names of 25 schools in Colombo and the suburbs.

Following in the footsteps of Arthur V. dias (Diyes) the famous Kos Mama of Panadura who inaugurated his jak-fruit propagation campaign on June 11, 1918 the present project's objectives include planting of 100,000 jak saplings throughout the country, popularisation and processing of jak-fruit related products, establishment of a jak-fruit research institute and providing employment for over 10,000 youth in the process.

The project had already been assured of land from the government, commercial sector and individuals including 1000 acres from the Mahaweli Authority, 5 acres each from Kandy Ranaviru Foundation and the North-Western Provincial Council.

The Jak plantating programmes will be held in the districts of Kandy, Galle, Matara, Anuradhapura, Kegalle, Jaffna, Ampara, Badulla, Ratnapura and Kurunegala.

Policemen on the mat

A police Inspector, two police Sergeants and two police Constables attached to Prevention of Terrorist Activities Kankesanthurai have been remanded by the Mallakan Magistrate P. Subramanian for allegedly stealing five barrels of grease worth 5 lakhs of rupees from the Kankesanthurai Army Store and selling them to a private petrol shed owner at Chunnakam.

It is said that a dispute arose among the five partners of the alleged theft in the division of the money that had accrued to them by the sale of five grease barrels and information had leaked to the Chunnakam police about this shady transaction.

The police arrested all the five accused and produced them before the Mallakam Magistrate.

The Magistrate also ordered the petrol shed owner and another involved in the purchasing of stolen property to be remanded.
