16 teams in schools' rugby sevens

Six schools from the outstations, seven from Colombo and three Provincial Union sides have been invited to play in the Schools Rugby 7s to be worked off concurrently with the 4th Singer-Sri Lankan International Rugby 7s of the Kandy Sports Club to be staged at the Bogambara Stadium on September 13, 14 and 15. This is being sponsored by Singer (Sri Lanka) Limited and SriLankan Airlines with the co-sponsors being Connaissance de Ceylan.

The six schools from the outstation are Dharmaraja, Kingswood, St. Anthony's, St. Sylvester's, Vidyartha and Trinity, while the schools from Colombo are Royal, S. Thomas', Isipatana, St. Peter's, Ananda, Thurstan and Wesley. The Provincial Unions are Sabaragamuwa PRU, Ruhunu PRU and Combined Kurunegala/Matale PRU.

The Chairman of the Organising Committee, Iswan Omar said that the Schools Pool games will be on September 13 with the International Pool games on September 14. The knockout stages for both the Schools and International tournaments are on September 15. He also disclosed that a women's 7s game is also on the card for September 15 before the International Cup category final.

Omar further said that all 15 overseas teams participating in the International 7s (excluding hosts Sri Lanka) will be sent 12 complimentary return air tickets (10 players and two officials), while the flight itineraries for all visiting teams have been conveyed to the respective Rugby Unions.

The 15 sides from oversees are: South Korea, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, China, Malaysia, Singapore, India, Arabian Gulf, Germany, Denmark, Czech Republic, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and Kenya. There were no response from Japan, Thailand and Kazakhastan, while Scotland, Wales, Fiji, Tonga, Papua New Guinea and New Zealand had shown interest in participating and may be tapped for next year (2003).

Omar further disclosed that the International Rugby Board (IRB) are attempting to include the Singer-SriLankan International 7s in the Asian Satellite in the near future, and representatives of both the IRB and the Asian Rugby Football Union (ARFU) have been invited for this year's 7s. Also, the IRB Editor and Media Representative, Chris Thau, together with a crew of four persons will assist in telecasting the 7s on Rupavahini and Channel eye, while Keith quinn, a TV presenter from New Zealand, too, will be present together with the 1971 All-Black's captain Andy Leslie.
