Suwaneetha and Sangani take Hyundai Trophies by LAL GUNESEKERA A former national amateur champion, Suwaneetha Selvaratnam (26) and R. Sangani (37 on a better back 9) won the Hyundai Challenge Trophies for the overall best gross score and overall best nett score at the Inaugural Hyundai Challenge Trophy for Ladies of the Ladies Section of the Royal Colombo Golf Club at the Ridgeways last Friday. Usha de Silva (37) and Suwaneetha Selvaratnam (36), who were the first and second runner-up to R. Sangani in the best nett, won return air tickets to Singapore and Chennai (Madras) respectively, while R. Sangani received the air ticket to Bangkok. Usha de Silva won the handicap 0 to 20 category with Suwaneetha Selvaratnam as the runner-up, while R. Sangani (37) and Sun Ae Thorhauge (35) were the winner and runner-up respectively in the handicap 21 to 36 category. M. J. Kim (36) and M. S. Park (29) were the winner and runner-up in the handicap 37 to 45 category, while S. Liyanage (29) and Rohini de Mel (19) the oldest player at 75 years were the winner and runner-up respectively in the non handicap to 45 category. The award for the player who was nearest to the Pin at the 13th hole went to another former national amateur champion, Yvonne Abhayaratne (9 feet), while the award for the longest drive (7th hole) went to Nonita Chand (187 yards), while B. Tanero was awarded the Booby Prize (second last overall nett score). Forty three golfers vied for honours, but not a single player was fortunate to win the Hyundai car on offer for the rare hole-in-one. A grand prize distribution was held on Friday night at the RCGC. |
