Forum to facilitate business with N-E The National Development Forum (NDF) has been formed by the National Chamber of Commerce of Sri Lanka (NCCSL) under the guidance of Chandra Embuldeniya, its President to facilitate business generation for those who seek business opportunities in the North and East. The delegations of business people who have been to Jaffna have formed the NDF. This Forum will serve other areas of the country as well in time. The Forum will lobby with the government and regional administrations to clear bottlenecks and hurdles for the business community. Over 150 are members at the moment and a working group of 12 people are actively taking measures to clear bottlenecks. The business environment in Sri Lanka has improved after the government initiated the peace process. The progress is slow but steady. This process has given the opportunity to the business community to venture out into areas hitherto not accessible to them. The NCCSL had taken the initiative to lead delegations of business people to Jaffna to provide opportunities for them to meet their counterparts in the North. Up to now there have been three delegations to Jaffna. Most of them have found business partners to create new opportunities for bringing items produced in the North or to take such items to North. The NDF has identified investment opportunities in Jaffna and are now in the process of clearing constraints such as insurance cover and investment guarantees. The members are planning to hold discussions with the government as well as the LTTE to enable them to give a clear message to investors. Recently one of their members Kool Air Ventures (Pvt.) Ltd. installed a 20 megawatt generator in Chunnakaman, Jaffna. The Vavuniya District Chamber of Commerce was also formed recently by Embuldeniya at the invitation of the District Secretary and GA K. Ganesh and Additional Secretary, Ministry of Enterprise Development, Industrial Policy and Investment Promotion Roy Jayasinghe during one of these visits. |
