Local clients help Hunas weather stormy year

Hunas Falls Hotels Ltd., the owner and operator of Hunas Falls Hotel at Elkaduwa, Kandy, has reported a turnover of Rs. 33.4 million for the financial year ended March 31, 2002. This is a decrease of three per cent from the Rs. 34.3 million recorded for the period ending March 31, 2001, the company's annual report for 2001 - 2002 said.

"This resulted in a loss before tax of Rs. 753,471 during the year against a loss of Rs. 483,938 in the previous year. The occupancy at the hotel was 57 per cent for the year, a slight growth over the 56 per cent occupancy rate of 2000/01," Chairman Hunas Halls Hotels Ltd. Sunil Mendis said in the annual report.

"Although tourism was heavily affected by the incidents of July 24 and September 11, these adverse events had only a modest impact on the hotel due to the local clientele from whom a significant portion of its turnover comes," he said.

Hunas Falls, comprising 28 deluxe rooms, one suite and two super luxury apartment suites, is marketed by Jetwing Hotels Ltd. During the year, the hotel continued to be marketed as a lead hotel in Jetwing's eco-tourism thrust. Treks have been developed from the hotel to the surrounding areas and more flora and fauna identified and recorded for enthusiasts. It also has an in-house naturalist.
