Lanka Bell now in Jaffna

Lanka Bell has lunched its digital telecommunication services to the Northern parts of Sri Lanka, via its VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) network in partnership with global telecommunications equipment providers NEC Corporation and JCsat of Japan.

VSAT is small software-driven earth station used for transmission of data, video or voice via satellite and requires no staff or additional technology to operate it. It simply plugs into existing terminal equipment.

Lanka Bell thus becomes the fist fixed wireless local loop operator to provide digital telecommunication services in the Northern region, the company said in a news release. The initial terminals have been deployed at Point Pedro, Nelliady and Jaffna and will be used to provide pay phone services in partnership with Tritel.

"VSAT satellite communications provides virtually error-free digital data communications and more than 99.9 per cent network reliability", said a company spokesman, who added: "No matter how remote or dispersed an organisation's operations are, VSAT can provide a link to the head office". VSAT provides remote monitoring and data streaming services from remote or hazardous sites and is easy to deploy as the network does not require backbone infrastructure to be built.

Lanka Bell hopes to make available the worldwide Internet backbone so that the Internet could be accessed for business as well as educational purposes. Emergency Service Organisations in remote areas can also be connected through this network.

VSAT is growth compatible and allows the user to make incremental increases in its network. The use of VSAT provides the ability to expand capacity and system growth, while maintaining a control on costs, which are closely associated with the increase in capacity or system growth. The VSAT network allows many options in planning the network with regard to bandwidth, services and protocols. It also provides a seamless means of integrating a wide area network across the country, or across the world including International Private Leased Circuits.
