Busses in pieces after accident

More than 15 busses belonging to the Peoplised Transport Services (PTS) were damaged by an angry mob in Nugegoda yesterday afternoon, following the death of a 55-year old woman who was run over by a bus plying the Pettah-Homagama route.

The woman, Yasawathi Ganhewa, who was crossing the road at a traffic-crossing at the Bogaha junction in Nugegoda died killed instantly, around 3.15 p.m. According to eye witness accounts Yasawathi's foot had got caught to the left tyre of the bus that was slowly moving from its halted position at the colour light signals. "She screamed, but it was too late to prevent her from being knocked down and run over," an eyewitness said.

ASP Samaraweera of the Nugegoda range directing investigations said that the driver of the bus had reported to Mirihana police station after the accident.
