Annan commends Govt's peace initiatives United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan commended the initiatives of the UNF government to bring the LTTE to the negotiating table and offered whatever assistance for a permanent peace in Sri Lanka when Foreign Minister Tyronne Fernando called on him on Thursday (13). The Minister had a long discussion with the Secretary General (SG) at the United Nations building in New York and invited him to visit Sri Lanka. "Maybe we can go together to Jaffna," Mr. Annan told the Minister, accepting the invitation. Minister Fernando urged the assistance of the SG to strengthen Sri Lanka's relations with the UN which were not at a satisfactory level during the past regime. The SG made a special remark on the enthusiasm of Sri Lankan people on the peace process, both in the North and the South. The Minister pointed out that the people have taken the peace process into their hands. This fact was clearly exhibited during the last two elections, the general polls and the local government polls. he said. Mr. Fernando also thanked the UN for all its assistance in rehabilitation and reconstruction work in the North and East. During his two-day stay in New York, the Minister had meetings with UNICEF Executive Director Carol Bellamy, UN Under-Secretary General (Political Affairs) Kieran Prendergast, UNDP Chief Menock Brown and Under Secretary General (Disarmament Affairs) Jayantha Dhanapala. |
