Better times ahead for tourism here

by Anton Nonis

Sri Lanka is fast gaining popularity as a tourist destination with a steady increase of foreigners visiting the country in the first quarter of the year, according to statistics of the Ceylon Tourist Board. Most of the foreign tourists had come from India and Malaysia.

The influx of tourists for the months from January to April : 28,296, 31,683, 33,000 and 37,057 respectively. Despite earlier predictions of a setback for the country's tourist industry, things have taken a dramatic turn with a steep rise in the number of tourist arrivals. Analysts had forecast that tourism was bound to pick up and boom with the right environment for the foreign visitors.

With the dawn of peace following the cessation of hostilities after the MoU was signed between the United National Front Government and the LTTE, foreigners had started to visit the country and this augured well for the future of the tourist industry. Besides this, various promotional programs including the "Buy one get one" had also contributed immensely to the improvement of tourism here.
