Sangeet troupe from India A Rabindra Sangeet group led by Ms. Srabani Chatterjee from Calcutta, India, will visit Sri Lanka from 18th - 23rd June 2002 to commemorate the birth anniversary of the famous poet and Nobel laureate Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore. The group's performances in Colombo, Kandy and Horana, are being jointly organised by the High Commission of India and the Ministry of Cultural Affairs of Sri Lanka. 19th June 2002 - Elphinstone Theatre, Maradana, at 6.30 pm 20th June 2002 - Sri Palee Mandapaya, Horana, at 6 pm 22nd June 2002 - Mahamaya Girls College Auditorium, Kandy The performances will provide the Sri Lankan audience an opportunity to enjoy and appreciate Rabindra Sangeet, poems written and set to melodious music by Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore. As Tagore said 'My poems without their melodies are like butterflies without their wings'. Tagore's poems captured the heart of his native Bengal, and all of India, and when he travelled to the West, his acceptance as one of the finest writers of the world was immediate and overwhelming. His poems have lived through the whole of the twentieth century as songs. Rabindra Sangeet, as it is popularly known is a breathtaking fusion of Tagore's poetic and musical genius. In composing Rabindra Sangeet, Tagore drew on western music as well as classical Indian music, making significant use as well as the traditions of Indian devotional music and Bengali folk music. Such was the impact of this creation, that it not only withstood the test of time for more than a century, but also secured a unique place for itself in the subcontinent's musical culture. Ms. Srabani Chatterjee is a gifted vocalist, having obtained her formal training in Rabindra Sangeet from veterans like Arabinda Biswas, Purba Dam, Suchitra Mitra and Rathin Choudhury. An accomplished artiste, her exclusive devotion to Radindra Sangeet has earned her an esteemed place in music circles. The visit of the troupe is being sponsored by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations. |
