Vaas reaches 200 Test wickets landmark MANCHESTER, England, June 15 (Reuters) - Left-arm seamer Chaminda Vaas captured his 200th Test wicket for Sri Lanka after a delayed start to the third day of the third and final Test against England at Old Trafford on Saturday. Vaas reached the landmark in his 62nd Test by having Alex Tudor caught off an outside edge by Russel Arnold at second slip for 19. It was England's only loss in the curtailed morning session lasting an hour as they extended the overnight 377 for six to 428 for seven at lunch, with Alec Stewart unbeaten on 78 and Ashley Giles 16 not out. Play began an hour after the scheduled start time because of damp areas in the outfield that were caused by torrential rain on Friday. Stewart and Tudor began to make up for lost time with a flurry of strokes before Vaas broke through with his 200th wicket. It was a rare moment of joy in the series for the Sri Lankan paceman, who had a total haul of two for 305 in the first two tests. The touring team were then frustrated by Giles and Stewart, who square cut crisply and drove fluently through the covers, as they added 28 in an unfinished eighth-wicket stand at the interval. England, who lead 1-0, are seeking to clinch their first Test series win since a 2-1 success in Sri Lanka early in 2001. |
