Ten Sri Lanka players in Indian zonal tennis tourneys by LAL GUNESEKERA A squad of 10 players (six boys and four girls) are presently in India playing in two South Indian Zonal Tennis Tournament in Chennai and Pondicherry in the under-14 age group. The six boys are R.K. Ravindra Kumar, Mayuresh Rajaratnam, R. Cooray, D. Thalagala, Dinush Kahanthan and Dinusha Wijesuriya, while the four girls are Rukisha Alahkoon, Pavindra Ekanayake, Jithmie Jayawickreme and Piyumi Abeysinghe. They are accompanied by Jagath Welikala (coach - boys) and Shalini Pereira (coach - girls). The head coach of Sri Lankan Tennis Association (SLTA), Arul Amalanathan, said that on this two week tour, the Sri Lankans will first play in Chennai and then Pondicherry. He further said that this was the first time that such a young side was sent overseas to give them an opportunity of playing against some good opposition, and that an under-14 pool will be picked soon to be in constant training for tournaments next year (2003). Amalnathan also disclosed that boys and girls in the under-18, under-16 and under-14 age groups will be sent in December to play in the Indian Junior National Championship in New Delhi, after the success of Franklyn Emmanual and N.S. Nishendran earlier. In August or September, top under-14 and under-16 players will figure in another zonal circuit in South India. Already eight players (six boys and two girls) are at the Catalax Training Centre in Barcelona, Spain attending an advanced training camp. The boys are - Franklyn Emmanual, N.S. Nishendran, Amrith Rupasinghe, Shyamalan Sabanathan, Harshana Godamanne and Sashivaran Sabanathan, while the two girls are Vindya Dayananda and Amitha Arulpragasam. Amalnathan leaves tomorrow (Monday) for Spain to see "how the Lankans are faring" and on their return follow up on their training. |
