Hockey to be made popular in Bandarawela by V. T. RAJ, Badulla Sports Correspondent Arrangements are being made to introduce hockey in Bandarawela by the Uva Hockey Association. The President of the Uva Hockey Association, D. Vincent Dias who is also a member of the Uva Provincial Council is the man behind this venture. In this connection a special meeting was conducted recently at the Bandarawela Urban Council Hall presided over by Mr. Dias. Speaking at this meeting, Mr. Dias said that hockey is being conducted in Uva since 1930 and although St. Thomas' College, Bandarawela and S. Thomas' College, Gurutalawa were participating in hockey no other school or club team to be interested in playing hockey in Bandarawela. A coaching camp for schools and clubs in Bandarawela started yesterday and will be continued today at the Bandarawela Esplande. The Ministry of Sports attached to Uva Provincial Council will provide necessary equipment for hockey, added Mr. Dias. Arrangements are also being made to conduct a seven-a-side hockey tournament among clubs and schools at Bandarawela on June 29 and 30. Both men and women will participate in this inaugural tournament. Once the schools and clubs in Bandarawela are coached a tournament will be conducted among them. The following organising committees too were elected at this meeting. President: Mr. Nalin Sooriyage, (Chairman, Urban Council, Bandarawela). Vice Presidents: Mr. S. Sathyamoorthy (Deputy Chairman, U. C. Bandarawela). Co-ordinators: Messrs. K. H. P. Jayatissa (Director of Sports, Education Dept), Capt. K. Rajaguru Bandara (Sri Lanka Army) and Ms. Nayana D. Karunarachchi (Sports Officer). Hony. Secretary: Mr. D. Denzil Darling (STC, Bandarawela) Asst. Secretary: Sumith Priyantha (Bandarawela MMV). Hony. Treasurer: Mr. M. S. M. Zarook (Education Department) Committee: Ms. Shirantha Medawela (STC, Gurutalawa), J. D. Henry Maduralatha (Little Flower Convent), Jayantha de Silva (P. Bandarawela) and Yobitha Mendis. |
