More helpers at Moratuwa Sports Club by P.H.S. Mendis I would kindly request you to publish in your esteemed 'Sports Column' as I find that there are still some more omissions in the article, captioned 'More Helpers at Moratuwa Sports Club', that appeared in the Sunday Observer of June 2nd and June 9th respectively. I fully endorse the contents, which appeared in the Sunday Observer of 9th June sent by Mr. N.T.B. Fernando, a stalwart of the Moratuwa Sports Club with regard to some omissions. In addition, it is very correct to state that there are some more names that were left out from the list of those, who had helped Moratuwa Sports Club. The names that have been omitted were those, who had contributed their share, being the players in the victorious team, which emerged joint-winners of the 'Daily News' Trophy in 1957. The names of the players are as follows: Messrs S. Dudley Peiris, Lloyd Perera, T. Wijewickrama, Lakshman Perera, Lakdasa Gunatilleke, Sweeny Fernando and K.T.P. Wijedasa. The names that were left out of those, who had helped were messrs. Sydney Mendis, Hilton Perera, W. P. Perera, J. W. Fernando, Percy Perera the official scorer of the Moratuwa Sports Club in the fifties, Godfrey Peiris and Christie Franke the last two named being in the cheer squad. Moratuwa Sports Club became joint champions of Daily News Trophy with Nondescripts Cricket Club. The final was played on the 7th April 1957. Moratuwa Sports Club was captained by A.J.T. Peiris, while the Nondescripts Cricket Club was skippered by C. Chellarajah. The players representing the two teams: Moratuwa Sports Club: A.J.T. Peiris (captain), Stanley Fonseka, D.D. Jayasinghe, H.I. Fernando, P.H.S. Mendis, D. Mahindapala, R. Dudley Peiris, Lloyd Perera, Herbert Fonseka, B. Premachandra, Lakdasa Gunatilleke, Lakshman Perera, Bertram de Silva, Jinadasa de Silva, K.T.P. Wijedasa, T. Wijewickrama and Suranjith Mendis. Nondescript Cricket Club: C. Chellarajah (captain), M. Naina Marikkar, V. Obeysekera, E. Perera, H.N. Duckworth, M. Brohier, R. Brohier, Anzar Fuard, Roy Abeysekera, L.G. Abeysekera and J.M. Piyasena. |
