Going for a Mercedes Benz? Then don't miss this...

The 11-year-old Mercedes Benz Club will be holding its sixth "Mercedes Benz Pageant" at the BMICH grounds today Sunday June 16 commencing at 8 a.m.

Speaking at the press briefing at the SSC recently, Hiranjan Welagedara, Secretary of the Mercedes Benz Club said that this Pageant is the sixth of its kind and they as a club are hoping to make it an annual event.

"This event which is open to all the proud Mercedes Benz owners will attract over 250 to 300 owners of Mercedes Benz vehicles and every participant will have a chance of winning in the various categories.

The categories are as follows: Oldest Mercedes Benz on show, best maintained cars(for each category), first lady driver, car that has travelled from the longest distance, longest ownership, youngest owner, largest fleet owner, oldest owner's driving licence, best looking Mercedes Benz in the old and new category and many more.

Heading the organising committee is "Mercedes Benz Club President Farih Fauz and comprising of renowned driver Bri Ponnabalam, Freddy Alles, Asgi Akbarally, Sidath Fernando, Sunil de Costa, Upali Kapilasena and DIMO's CEO, Ranjith Pandithage.

From the very inception, Diesel and Motor Engineering Company(DIMO), the general importer and distributor for Mercedes Benz in Sri Lanka, has been the sponsor of this glamorous event.

Last year marked the club's 10th anniversary and a programme "A decade of excellence" was held at the Nuwara Eliya Grand Hotel with a Mercedes Benz Rally commencing from Colombo followed by a prize giving and a dinner dance.

The last pageant held during troubled times in 1999 attracted over 200 "stars", and this year with peace reigning over 300 "stars" are expected.

Asgi Akbarally, committee member said that committee members are not entitled to enter the competition but they can display their cars at the pageant.

At the moment there are about 100 club members. Also on the agenda are social events and charity programs and according to immediate, Past President, Bri Ponnabalam the club also assists the traffic in maintaining law and order on the streets.

Farih Fauz said that DIMO's has very kindly sponsored the show and even given generous discounts to members when they get their cars repaired.

The vote of thanks was delivered by Ranjith Pandithage, CEO of DIMO's who is a committee member of the Mercedes Benz Club.
