CR in rousing 42/9 win over Havies

by LAL GUNASEKERA

CR & FC made their traditional rivals Havelocks see red at Longden Place yesterday trouncing their opponents by 42 points (4 goals, 1 try, 3 penalties) to 9 (3 penalties) after leading 17-3 at half time in their first-round Caltex League Rugby Championship game. This was CR's first win over Havies at Longden Place since 1999.

It was good open rugby by CR particularly in the second session. They scored only two tries in the first session but cut loose in the second to touch down on three occasions. The 'outsides' ran the ball judiciously with right winger Kishan Musafer and centre Harin Kaluarachchi outstanding. The forwards too played their hearts out and in addition CR's place-kicker Roshan Peiris was in great form.

The Havies were guilty of not playing together as a team. The 'outsides' hardly ran the ball with moves breaking down in the centre. The forwards too looked unfit.

After Tikiri Dissanayake put Havies ahead in the third minute with a simple 10-metre penalty, CR went ahead in the 11th minute with Musafer flying over 20 metres off a Champika Nishantha break for Peiris to convert. Five minutes later Peiris put over a 22 metre penalty for CR to lead 10-3 and three minutes later Musafer ran in his second try for Peiris to make yet another splendid conversion (CR 17-3).

After the turn around, CR made it 20-3 with a 25 metre penalty by Roshan Peiris but Havies reduced the lead five minutes later with Tikiri Dissanayake making certain of a 22-metre penalty. In the 16th minute Viraj Prasanna went over off a five-metre short-tap but Peiris failed to add the extra points (CR 25-6). Peiris than made sure of a 22 metre penalty in the 20th minute for CR to lead 28-6. Three minutes later Havies reduced the lead through a 35 metre penalty by Tikiri Dissanayake.

CR's Kishan Musafer who was in great form then scored his third try of the game in the 28th minute beating Havies left winger Thisal Jayawardena to the ball after putting ahead. Peiris made a good conversion (CR 35-9). In the 38th minute replacement left winger Nishantha Kumara made a superb run down his flank to score and with Peiris converting CR had scored an easy 42-9 victory.
