England thrash Denmark 3-0 to reach quarter-finals

NIIGATA, Japan, June 15 (Reuters) - England thrashed Denmark 3-0 on Saturday with all the goals coming in the first half to advance to the quarter-finals of the World Cup.

Defender Rio Ferdinand opened the scoring in only the fifth minute of the second round game when Danish keeper Thomas Sorensen helped his header from a corner into the net.

Michael Owen scored his first goal of the finals in the 22nd minute and his strike partner Emile Heskey made it three a minute before halftime.

England, who had scored only two goals in their three group games, go on to play the winner of Monday's second round match between Brazil and Belgium.

Denmark, who eliminated defending champions France in the group stage, failed to score for the first time in a World Cup finals match. It was their 13th game in all.
