Eight more Naval Monitors arrive

by RAMANI KANGARAARACHCHI

Eight members from Denmark arrived in Sri Lanka yesterday Saturday (22) to serve on the Naval Monitoring Team thus increasing its total number to fifteen the "Sunday Observer" learns.

The first five members including a woman arrived here early this month and the Naval authorities pointed out that a minimum of nine was required for the purpose. However they commenced operations in Jaffna, Trincomallee and Mullativu with the limited available resources.

The Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) press officer, Titur Torkelssom said that some of the members arrived yesterday had similar experience in working in Cosovo, Afganistan and Macedonia and certain others with military and civilian experience. Few of them had come to Sri Lanka before. He said that these monitors have to serve in both Government and LTTE vessels, but so far they have not worked in LTTE boats and they may have to do so very soon.

Naval authorities confirmed that at present operations are going on smoothly.
