Master Divers commended for crane repairs by ANTON NONIS The giant Korean firm, Samsung Heavy Industries commended local shipping company, Master Divers recently for successfully repairing two large cranes that were being transported aboard the vessel Dock Express. The vessel was on a distant journey from Korea to Croatia, transporting the cranes when it suffered damages on the cranes in bad weather and could not proceed. The ship detoured to Colombo and Master Divers was on the job. The work was completed in five days. The cranes, which were identical, each weighed 50 tonnes. The steel structures at the apices in both were cracked open. The work was conducted out-harbour. Eight teams, each consisting of four workers, were deployed. Complex equipment had to be used for welding, cutting and gauging. According to Director - Operations Ruwan Wickremanayake, who was in charge of the job, the work was done in keeping with international standards. It was a round-the-clock job. The latter stages of the repair required the ship to be towed inside the harbour to an alongside berth. This was to reach a height of 45 metres on the damaged crane for which a shore-crane had to be used. Officers inspected the Non-Destructive Tests and Ultrasonic Testing throughout the process. They handed over the report of the job to representatives of Samsung Industries who built the crane. The Rail Mounted Quayside Cranes were to be received by Rijeka Port Authority of Croatia. Dock Express was a vessel of 13,110 dwt, fitted with two 4000 HP engines. |
