First garment factory to win new ISO certification Gabo Apparels Pvt Ltd. has become the first garment factory in Sri Lanka to obtain the new ISO 9001:2000 standard from the Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI). The factory, established in Mahiyanganaya in 1992 under the 200 garment factory programme, employs 450 people. Chairman Gabo Group of Companies Gabo Peiris said they had to face severe problems at inception due to the distance, lack of skilled workers, different behavioral patterns and absenteeism, but they had overcome all these problems. "The girls who came to work had never even seen a sewing machine," he added. "I am proud and happy as I have helped develop the rural economy of the country and also produced a quality product. All staff members ensure that the quality of the garment is maintained at every stage. Obtaining the certification is the first step of a long journey in the years ahead." He said: "We will use quality as a tool to be competitive and gain a share of the apparel business to our country." The US and UK are its main buyers. SLSI Director General C.D.R.A. Jayawardena said obtaining this certification is a great achievement for a factory situated in a rural area such as Mahiyanganaya. He said the certification will ensure that the product is of consistent quality. It will also help attract more business to the company. The SLSI will carry out two independent quality audits a year and provide reports to the management on the quality standards. The company is a member of the Gabo Group. The group consists of Gabo Travels, Gabo Holidays, Gabo Travels Pvt Ltd., Gabo Apparels Pvt Ltd. and Gabo Real Estate Development Pvt Ltd. (SG) |
