Sel lipi: Unidentified Flying Objects It seems that the denizens of Polonnaruwa have been seeing things. For the past month, it has been reported, villagers in the area have been observing lights in the sky, as well as 'unidentified flying objects' (UFOs). The lights have been seen going up and down and round and round, sometimes surrounded by UFOs. The first reaction to this might be that the villagers themselves had been 'lit up' with too much locally-brewed 'moonshine'. This writer recalls that there were newspaper reports, in the late '60s, of some UFO sightings in the hill-country, by planters returning home from 'the club' late at night. However, it appears that the Polonnaruwa sightings are strictly kosher. An eminent scientist from the University of Colombo has even speculated that there may be living beings inside the UFOs, at least confirming that the scientific establishment of Sri Lanka is taking this phenomenon seriously. So what are these UFOs? Are they visitors from Outer Space, perhaps from that solar system that astronomers were recently reported as discovering? If so what are they doing in Polonnaruwa? Not too long ago, a Sri Lankan writer suggested that the main dagobas in Anuradhapura had been built, arranged in a specific pattern as a signal for extra-terrestrial beings (ETs). The Pyramids at Giza, he explained, were built in a similar pattern, observable from the sky. Is it possible that these UFOs are space-aliens looking for the dagoba-pattern, but in the wrong ancient city? Some of the villagers had first reported seeing the lights and later denied it. This kind of amnesia has been reported by Ufologist in the USA. It seems the ETs induce memory-loss in order to avoid detection, part of the conspiracy between them and the US Government to cover up the secret treaty they have made. A largish proportion of Americans also report having been abducted by the aliens. Meanwhile, the BBC reports that Scotland has become the top 'Alien Nation' and that Bonnybridge, in Stirlingshire has become the UFO capital of the world. Scotland has one UFO sighting reported every year per 17,000 inhabitants, the highest per capita UFO sighting rate in the world, as well as the largest number of sightings in a single country. The highest UFO concentration occurs in the area around Bonnybridge, in Stirlingshire and neighbouring Westlothian. Ufologist explain that Bonnybridge must lie close to a 'portal', a 'wormhole' in the space-time continuum. In other words, it is a gateway to a shortcut through the cosmos, a sort of Galactic motorway-exit which is being utilised by inter-stellar tourists. These facts are being publicised by no less a body than the Scottish Tourist Board. So there we have it. The strange lights in Polonnaruwa must be caused by outer-space tourists, venturing far from the beaten path. Perhaps some enterprising Cosmic Kuoni has opened a 'portal' close to Polonnaruwa, to take advantage of the ceasefire. Surely it is up to the Ceylon Tourist Board to take steps actively to promote inter-galactic tourism in Sri Lanka, now that an interest has been shown. After all, the North American ETs have their 'Bermuda Triangle' and the Scottish UFOs have the 'Flakirk Triangle', so why can't we develop our 'Cultural Triangle' for our space-alien visitors? |
