The Rock - in the cool climes of Nuwara Eliya

by Beverley Jansz

Amidst the picturesque green hills and the cool climes of Nuwara Eliya, situated at an elevation of 6,200 feet, stands The Rock, the star-class property offering Sri Lanka's traditional hospitality to the discerning traveller.

Around 180 km from Colombo, amidst the rippling waters of Nuwara Eliya, at the peak of the mountains surrounding a valley, covered with mist, stands the Rock, a star class hotel.

It is the ideal base from where Sri Lanka's luscious tea country could be explored as its elevation gives the adventurous traveller a distinct advantage.

The hotel has 10 quaint and deluxe rooms offering all modern facilities, including hot and cold water, attached bathrooms, piped music, TV with Bar and Log fire in the Lounge. The Rock is very popular among honeymooners. It offers truly personalised service.

In close proximity to the hotel are the Hakgala Botanical Gardens known for its rare collection of Roses and Orchids, the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club where one could enjoy the challenge of a 18-hole course on hilly terrain, Tennis Courts trout streams in the vicinity where fishing is allowed. Just 29 km away is the Hortain Plains Nature Reserve, one of Sri Lanka's major tourist attractions. The Rock offers delicious Western, Eastern and Chinese cuisine and specialises in Sri Lankan culinary delights.

The management of The Rock was taken over by sterling Vacations (Pvt) Ltd. recently and a versatile and veteran hotelier, Ananda Cooray has been appointed the new General Manager. Coorary has massive plans for the upgrading of The Rock including a massive refurbishment. The location of the hotel has all potentials to make it one of Nuwara Eliya's major tourist attractions, Coorary said.
