889 Lankans win US visas

Sri Lankans who have been granted resident visas in the USA's latest visa lottery are advised to "act on their immigrant visa applications quickly", the United States Embassy in Colombo said.

A US embassy communique said:

"The State Department has announced that eight-hundred-and-eighty-nine (889) Sri Lankans are among the 87000 persons who have been notified that they are among the winners of the DV-2003 diversity visa lottery. The visas given under this program are for permanent residence in the United States.

The diversity lottery was conducted under the terms of Section 203 (c) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, which makes available 50,000 permanent resident visas annually to persons from countries with low rates of immigration to the United States.

The winners of the lottery should act on their immigrant visa applications quickly. Applicants who have not applied for and received their visas by September 30, 2003, will lose their eligibility. These conditions also apply to spouses and children of visa lottery winners. Registrants living legally in the United States who wish to apply for adjustment of their status must contact the Immigration and Naturalization Service for information on the requirements and procedures.

Regarding the next lottery draw the dates for the mail-in period for the DV-2004 lottery are scheduled from October 7, 2002 until November 6, 2002. Instruction forms on entering the DV-2004 program will be available at the Embassy beginning late July or early August 2002 or on the Internet at www.travel.state.gov."
