Seven thousand to get Mahapola schols by Don Asoka Wijewardena Seven thousand scholarships will be awarded to needy students by the Mahapola Trust Fund (MTF), this year. A trade fair with over 150 trade stalls and an exhibition will be held at St. Thomas' College, Kotte from July 6 to 13. Speaking at a media briefing held at the Consumer Affairs Ministry's auditorium on June 28, the Director General of the Mahapola Trust Fund, Mrs. Sharmila Perera, said that arrangements have been made to award 22 scholarships to students who were unable to pursue higher education for want of money. She further said that about 75 per cent of university students were eligible to receive Rs. 1,650 per month from the MTF to purchase books and stationery and this grant was not meant as subsistence allowance or a dole. She stressed that the MTF was a self-financing scheme run independently, with a deposit of Rs. 3 billion providing Rs. 500 million annual interest. "The Development Lottery is our saviour, because, 50 per cent of the sales from the lottery is credited to the Mahapola account and the balance 50 goes to the President's Fund," said Mrs. Perera. According to the MTF, arrangements have been made to support unemployed youth from the earnings of Mahapola Trade Fair and Exhibition. The Mahapola Trust Fund established in 1981 was a brainchild of late Lalith Athulathmudali. |
