Varsity Z scores system under review by Anjana Gamage The "Z scores" system currently used to select students to universities, will be reviewed by the members appointed by the University Grants Commission (UGC), the "Sunday Observer" learns. Minister of Education Karunasena Kodituwakku and Minister of Higher Education Kabir Hashim are expected to have lengthy discussions on the subject with the university professors and other eminent education officers, whether or not to continue with the system. According to Senior Assistant Registrar of the UGC, Mr. Premakumara, students who sat the A/L Examination in 2001, have already been selected for university admission on the Z scores system. "The candidates eligible for admission have been informed of the respective universities they have been selected with the internal English course, they have to follow, a part of their syllabus which has already begun", he said. With the introduction of the Z scores system for university admission by the previous government, students, parents and teachers were in a dilemma over the new system. Some of the parents and students had even filed action in the Supreme Court against the new system. However the Supreme Court has ordered to go ahead with the Z scores system for the students of year 2001 A/L. The case filed by the parents against the Z scores at the court of appeal was dismissed recently. At present the Z scores system is based on by converting the raw marks obtained by students in different subjects with a standard scale called the Z distribution. |
