Annual turtle by-catch on the rise

The annual incidental capture of sea turtles in the fishing industry (turtle by-catch) is on the increase and may reach as much as 15,000. The by-catch has risen drastically and is in total contrast with the previous estimates, it was revealed at the National Symposium on Sea Turtle Biology, Conservation and Management recently.

Research conducted by the Turtle Conservation Project (TCP) with about 30% of the total fishing community in Sri Lanka from November 1999 to November 2000, reported a total of 5,241 sea turtle by-catch within one year, said Thushan Kapurusinghe, TCP team leader."Considering the size of our island and the endangered status of some sea turtles visiting Sri Lankan shores, these figures were drastic," he said. Of the seven species of sea turtles in the world, five species, namely the Green turtle, Leather Back turtle, Loggerhead turtle, Hawksbill turtle and the Olive Ridley turtle come to Sri Lankan shores for nesting. - VF

VAT registration on hold

The Inland Revenue Department has stopped registrations for the Value Added Tax (VAT) from last Wednesday following a decision to strictly persist with usual tax procedures involving existing registration certificates issued for Goods and Services Tax (GST) until further notice.

The Director General of the Inland Revenue Department, B.T. Perera said that there was a "bit of uncertainty" over introducing the new tax (VAT) on account of a lawsuit pending against it being filed by a citizens' group. Meanwhile, top authorities in the country's State financial sector are optimistic that they would be able to implement the VAT Bill from August this year. The Advisor Fiscal Policy, Fiscal Policy and Economic Affairs Division of the Finance ministry, Piyadasa Guruge said that preparations were being made to implement the bill from August 1. - CW
