Sri Lanka expected to field 140 athletes at Asian C'ships

Thirty three countries have confirmed their participation at the 14th Asian Athletic Championships hosted by Sri Lanka to be staged in Colombo from August 9 to 12 at the Sugathadasa Stadium.

Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited (Print Media sponsor) and Dialog GSM (Sri Lanka team sponsor of the event) are two of the six Gold sponsors of this big event.

Prema Pinnewale, the AAA General Secretary and Secretary General Organising Committee of Asian Athletic Championships said that at the moment they are happy with the response that they have received so far and they are making all arrangements to make this 14th Asian Athletic Championships, Colombo 2002 a great success.

"We expect around 900 athletes and delegates from foreign countries. Up to now, we have received around 670 athletes/delegates," Pinnawala said.

Sri Lanka squad will be picked on July 22 on completion of the National Athletic Championships to be held from July 17 to 20 at the Sugathadasa Stadium. Sri Lanka athletes will be around 140.

The countries and the number of athletes from foreign countries are as follows: India - 82, Japan 70, PR China - 53, Qatar - 68, Korea - 33, Thailand - 40, Bahrain - 12, Bhutan - 5, Cambodia - 3, Indonesia - 6, Iran - 20, Kyrghyztan - 7, Kuwait - 32, Myanmar - 5, Oman - 6, Pakistan - 20, Macau China - 3, Palestine - 3, Philippines - 23, Saudi Arabia - 29, Chinese Taipei - 29, Tajikistan - 8, Kazakhstan - 29, Malaysia - 18, Nepal - 12, Singapore - 9, Syria - 7, Uzbekistan - 10, Vietnam - 8, United Arab Emirates - 8, Yemen - 6.

The participants will be housed at Galadari Meridien, Taj Samudra, Hilton, Trans Asia, Lanka Oberoi and JICA Hilton.

The Congress will be on August 8 at Galadari Meridien where office-bearers of the Asian Amateur Athletic Association (AAAA) will participate.
