Akshayan Rajasingam wins all five events, but no qualifiers for Asian Games and SAF Games by LESLIE FERNANDO National swimmer Akshayan Rajasingam of Otter Aquatic Club did well to win all five events he participated at the four-day selection trials for Asian Games 2002 and SAF Games (preliminary) 2003 conducted by NAASU and concluded at the Sugathadasa Stadium swimming pool yesterday. Akshayan who has represented Sri Lanka at several meets, won the 50 metres butterfly stroke 28.13 secs, 50 metres freestyle 26.32 secs., 100 metres back stroke 1:07.07 secs., 100 metres butterfly 1:03.31 secs. and the 100 metres freestyle 58.44 secs. Josephian swimmer Rumedha Madigasekera and Thomian swimmer Raghavan Madawala, both national swimmers together with Mihiri Kandanarachchi of Mahamaya College had two wins each. Rumedha won the 1,500 metres freestyle 19:00.05 secs and 400 metres free style 4:49.28 secs. Raghavan won the 200 metres back stroke - 2.53.44 secs. and 100 metres breast stroke 1:14.10 secs. Mihiri swimming in the women's open, won the 100 metres breast stroke 1:27.63 secs. and the 200 metres breast stroke 3:13.35 secs. It was a pity that none of the swimmers reached the qualifying time set for Asian Games by NAASU. |
