SLTA to revive tennis in North - East

by LAL GUNESEKERA

With the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Ealam (LTTE), and sports activities in the Northern and Eastern Provinces of the country being revived, the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) is taking steps to revive the sport over there.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the SLTA, Boshan Dayaratne, told the 'Sunday Observer' that will be joined by ASP V. T. Sunderalingam (who is a Committee member) in visiting Jaffna in the second week of July in an attempt to revive tennis in the peninsula.

Dayaratne said, "We are already in contact with Fr Bernard, Principal of St. Patrick's College and during our visit to Jaffna will meet with seven other school principals. Jaffna had about eight to ten courts, but we understand that only about two are in playing condition. We will hold discussions with the authorities in Jaffna and help revive this sport.

Meanwhile, about 70 top juniors from overseas representing nearly 20 countries will compete at the Junior International (Under-18) Championship of the International Tennis Federation (ITF), which is a world ranking competition, to be staged at the National Tennis Centre (NTC) in Greenpath in September.

Dayaratne said that this was the second such tournament to be staged in Sri Lanka this year (2002) and the earlier event held in January for the 19th consecutive year attracted players from 18 countries. Some of the countries invited to send their best boys and girls are India, Pakistan Bangladesh, Maldives, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Philippines, Japan, South Korea, China, Chinese Taipei, Australia, New Zealand, Austria etc.

The Junior Nationals are scheduled to be staged from August 12 to 18 sponsored by IWS Holdings, who are the agents for Porsche, while the senior nationals will be worked off from August 26 to September 2.
