Sri Lanka racing drivers form union by PELHAM JURIANSZ The Sri Lanka Racing Drivers formed the Sri Lanka Racing Drivers Union (SLRDU) on Friday when they met at the Sports Ministry auditorium. Mahen Thambiah, well renowned racing driver, was elected as the pro-tem Chairman and the following were elected as office bearers: Buddhika de Silva (Secretary), Deshan de Silva (Asst. Secretary), Romani de Silva (Treasurer), Rohan de Silva (Asst. Treasurer). Committee Members: Mahen Thambiah, Upul Perera, Dinesh Senanayake, S. Manapperuma, Nihal Premasiri, Shasika Dias, M. Mannapperuma. Treasurer Romani de Silva said that the aim of the Union is to maintain unity as the word so rightly says and to work together to foster unity among the 20 odd racing fraternities and clubs in Sri Lanka which hitherto had been working separately in organising races. The aims are to strive to bring motor racing i.e. 4 wheel racing standards in Sri Lanka up to International levels by promoting the uplift of safety standards pertaining to drivers and spectators and general competition rules and procedures. Another aim is to promote and co-ordinate amongst clubs, one make racing i.e for instance, the racing of one type of car like Toyota for instance, and one make championships in Sri Lanka. "The most important aim is to affiliate with international bodies and help promote the establishment of a race track in Sri Lanka like the one in Pannala. Let me stress that we do not intend to organise race meets at any time", stressed the Treasurer. Another important factor is that anyone wishing to join the Union should participated in at least two recognised races in the preceding 12 months from the date of application. The annual fee shall be Rs. 1,000 for an ordinary member. |
