Royal-Isipatana in 5-all draw by LAL GUNESEKERA It was yet another draw for the second consecutive year and both Royal and Isipatana, who are the only two schools to remain unbeaten in the current schools rugby season managed to keep their record intact. Both sides scored a try each in their Milroy Fernando Memorial Trophy at Longden Place yesterday. Last year, the game ended in a scoreless draw. Both Royal and Isipatana came into this game with a terrific reputation. The former had five wins in-a-row beating Zahira 57-6, St. Peter's 24-12, Ananda 20-3, St. Anthony's 34-14 and S. Thomas' 38-3, while the latter had beaten Kingswood 23-3, Wesley 6-3 and Trinity 43-8. Both managed to keep their unbeaten records intact. Royal had only themselves to blame. They had their chances, but poor ball handling and individual play put paid to their scoring chances. Of the 'outsides' left winger Bilal Yusuf was outstanding - making a few dangerous runs, with one ending in a try just before "lemons" off a 10-metre scrum inside Isipatana "22", but Chamath Danawansa fluffed the conversion. Came the secodn half and in the first 5 minutes Royal were all over Isipatana "22", but failed to penetrate the defence. Isipatana fought back into Royal territory with left winger Priyadarshana making a good run only to be brought down just in time. For 10 minutes or more, they were inside Royal "22", but they failed to make good use of the possession they won in the lines-out and scrums. Then in the 27th minute, right winger Dinesh Kumara dived over and Wettasinghe missed the conversion. Royal, in the last few minutes, tried their best to penetrate Isipatana defence which held firm and referee Anil Jayasinghe blew the final whistle with the scores level at 5-all. The under-17 game ended in a scoreless draw. |
