St. Peter's had it easy - beat S. Thomas' 19/5 by RANJAN ANANDAPPA A combined team effort coupled with a few moments of individual brilliance enabled St. Peter's to beat S. Thomas' by 19 points (two goals and try) to 5 (a try) and retained the Archibald Perera Memorial Trophy in their annual inter-school rugby encounter played at Havelock Park yesterday. The three tries for the Peterites were scored by their winger Mohammed Rinaz with support coming from the back division. The winners opened scoring in the fifth minute of the match through Rinaz and the try went unconverted. Minutes later the Thomians came into equal terms through a try scored by centre Amila Maduarachchi. The score was deadlock at 5 all at half time. The Peterites back division found their fluency after resumption and played well in attack and defence. They went to plant two more Rinaz tries. Rinaz covered good ground and ran powerfully and crashed through the Thomian defence to touch down under the post where Dinuk Jayasuriya gave them the extra points. Thereafter, Peterite number 8 and skipper Dilanka Wijesekera initiated a move and Rinaz once again scored a try which was a replica of the earlier one. Fly half Dinusha Jayasuriya did the conversion. The Peterites had a few anxious moments when the Thomians forced several short taps in the Petes danger zone, but they were unable to convert those into points as the Peterite defence stood firm.
