Effort to reach out to South : LTTE plans Sinhala newspaper, radio by R. Thurairatnam, Batticaloa Group Correspondent The LTTE is to shortly begin publishing a Sinhala language newspaper, the 'Sunday Observer' learns. This will be part of a major mass communication being launched by the Tigers, which includes an English language weekly newspaper, Sinhala radio broadcasts and a Sinhala Website. While the Sinhala newspaper is yet in the planning stage, the English journal 'North-East Herald' was due to be launched from Colombo this week. The Sinhala website and radio station will begin operating shortly. The communication effort by the LTTE is a bid to create awareness among the Sinhala intelligentsia and the common people of the South, of their aspirations and commitment to the peace process, according to informed sources. The Sinhala broadcasts will be beamed islandwide on FM and SW bands. The Website is being set up with the assistance of Sinhala intellectuals and academics. The LTTE are expected to launch the 'North East Herald' a Colombo-based English weekly, also for the same purpose. The Website, radio broadcasts and the English weekly will focus mainly on the Tamil people's right to self-determination, their current problems and their desire to achieve a negotiated settlement, according to the sources. The London-based IBC which now broadcasts a 24-hour Tamil service will shortly begin a one-hour Sinhala service for the Sri Lankans, we are informed. |
