Re-location of prisons to ease congestion The Interior ministry was looking at the possibility of relocating several prisons to less congested areas in towns with the object of providing adequate facilities to prison inmates serving sentences at these prisons, Interior Minister John Amaratunga told senior Prison officials at a meeting held at the Prisons Headquarters last Friday. Overcrowding was probably a cause for the recent riot at Tangalle prison and Sri Lanka had been castigated internationally for several massacres that took place in prisons a few years back, the minister said. Prison's Commissioner General Upali Samaraweera said there were around 20,000 prisoners being held in prisons in various parts of the country. Mr. Samaraweera suggested easing congestions in prisons by relocating prisoners to the 25 lock- ups in places like Hambantota, Embilipitiya, Trincomalee and elsewhere. -JJ |
