Caltex sponsors Deaf Schools softball cricket sixes

The Deaf Schools Past Pupils Association has found a true friend in Caltex to promote their sporting activities for the next three years. The second of the Caltex-Deaf Schools Past Pupils Association 'tie-up' will be today, when the six-a-side softball cricket tournament will be played at the De Soysa Stadium in Moratuwa with play scheduled to start at 10.30 a.m.

Seven schools with 11 teams have already confirmed participating in the first-ever Deaf Schools Softball Cricket Tournament and judging by the enthusiasm witnessed at the first ever inter-school netball tournament for deaf schools, this cricket tournament too should provide some exciting moments. The seven schools are: Matara, Balangoda, Moratuwa, Ratmalana, Thihariya, Kurunegala and Tangalle.

Minister of Economic Reforms, Science and Technology Milinda Moragoda will be the chief guest at the final while Managing Director of Caltex Kishu Gomes will be the guest of honour. The final is scheduled for 3 p.m.

Caltex should be lauded for the brave step taken to sponsor events of the Deaf Schools Past Pupils Association in Ratmalana even though they may not be getting the mileage as they would had they sponsored a livelier coverage of some other sports event with popular participants.

The first-ever sponsorship of the Schools Netball Tournament at Ratmalana earlier this year turned out to be well received by the teams that participated and the cheering with expressions in sign language no doubt touched the heart of Managing Director of Caltex Kishu Gomes who was a keen follower of the netball tournament.

It was on the success of that tournament that the MD of Caltex readily made the bold statement that his establishment would sports events in netball, cricket and volleyball for the deaf children for the next three years. "We also value this meeting which has blossomed into a strong relationship and will take us on a partnership for the next three years," said Vajira Abeysinghe - Head of Sales and Marketing of Caltex. "Simple Beginnings have made us closer to this community and many plans are underway from the organisation perspective in assisting these special children apart from sports," added Vajira Abeysinghe.
