Cargills Magic aims for 30% market share by JAYAMPATHY JAYASINGHE 'Ice cream, you scream, we all scream' was the theme when Cargills Quality Dairies (Pvt) Ltd., a subsidiary of Cargills Ceylon Ltd, launched its new ice-cream products in Colombo recently. The ice-cream comes in different varieties and flavours such as Vanilla Magic, Chocolate Magic, Kithul Magic, Magic Choc, Magic Cone, Fantastic and Cool Orange. The different varieties of products have been launched to capture the domestic ice-cream market. Cargills (Ceylon) Ltd. Deputy Chairman Ranjit Page said all products would be available at the 25 Food City supermarket outlets and elsewhere. He said they hope to produce around seven million litres of ice-cream per year to capture 30 per cent of the market share in Sri Lanka. "We have a capacity to produce around 14 million litres of ice-cream per year," he said. Mr. Page said the local dairy industry would benefit as all varieties of the ice-cream would be made with pure milk. They hope to collect around 50,000 litres of milk per day from the local dairy farmers. He said the products are competitively priced to capture the domestic market and prices would remain intact. "We have managed to keep the cost of production low by using indigenous materials," he said. Cargills Magic ice-cream will have two product categories - out-of-home-use and home-use. The out-of-home-use category which comprise ice-cream cups, popsicles and icy chocs is targeted at individual use. The home-use category has two main flavours, vanilla and chocolate, and comes in one and two litre boxes. Several other flavours and pack sizes are to be introduced to the market later. |
