Lanka Bell invests Rs. 200m on broadband services The telecommunications operator, Lanka Bell, will invest Rs. 200 million on its wireless broadband service, the company announced recently. BellBurst, the broadband data network, is the result of the company's tie-up with Harris Corporation, USA, Lanka Bell Managing Director Joey V. Mendoza said. The US company will provide the equipment, technology, training and expertise for the project. "With this project, we will be able to address the escalating demand created by the Internet and other digital services in the country for high-speed, high capacity data communication solutions. We are also planning to launch Internet Service Provider services next month," Mendoza said. BellBurst will provide Lanka Bell's business customers access to leased lines, high-speed Internet access, prioritised data services and toll-quality voice. It also supports multi-protocol interfaces and flexible bandwidth requirements from 64 kbps to 2 Mbps. Video conferencing, telemedicine and virtual private networks are other key applications offered. "One of the main benefits available to locals through this network will be the facility for distance learning, as it will provide easier access to outstation and remote areas," he said. Harris Corporation is over 100 years old and has been involved in the communications market for a long time, the company's Director Business Development - Asia Pacific Scott Crosbie said. (IT) |
